# Understanding the Basic Building Blocks of Latex Document

In order to understand the basic building blocks of LaTeX documents, it’s important to understand the structure of a typical LaTeX document. Basically, a LaTeX document contains two main parts. While the first one is the preamble. On the other hand, the second one is the document body.

## Description of the Basic Building Blocks of Latex Document

1. The Preamble. Actually, this is the first part of a LaTeX document and it contains the document settings, metadata, and package definitions. In fact, the preamble is enclosed between the \documentclass and \begin{document} commands. The following list shows some important elements of the preamble.
• Document class. The document class specifies the type of document you are creating. For example, \documentclass{article} creates an article document.
• Packages. In general, LaTeX packages are sets of commands and styles that extend the basic functionality of LaTeX. So, you can include packages in the preamble. For this purpose, there is \usepackage command.
• Title, author, and date. For this purpose, Latex has \title, \author, and \date commands, respectively.
1. The Document Body. This is the second part of a LaTeX document and it contains the actual content of the document. Also, the document body is enclosed between the \begin{document} and \end{document} commands. The following list shows some important elements of the document body.
• Sections and subsections. For this purpose, there are \section and \subsection commands to create sections and subsections in your document.
• Text formatting. Likewise, LaTeX provides many commands for formatting text, such as \textbf for bold, \textit for italics, and \underline for underlining.
• Lists. Similarly, you can create ordered or unordered lists using the \begin{enumerate} and \begin{itemize} environments, respectively.
• Tables. Furthermore, you can create tables using the \begin{tabular} environment.
• Images. Similarly, you can include images in your document using the \includegraphics command.
• Equations. Moreover, you can include mathematical equations in your document using the environment.
